Who Are We and What Are We Doing?

The June Lake Advocates is a newly formed nonprofit citizens group dedicated to maintaining the unique mountain character of the June Lake Loop. The group's first item of concern, and the primary motivation for its formation, is Intrawest's plans for development of the region across Highway 158 from the June mountain parking lot known as the Rodeo Grounds, consisting of the hills bordering the highway and the meadow beyond them.

The Specific Plan recently filed by Intrawest calls for 90 foot tall buildings, which exceeds the 35 foot height limitation imposed by the June Lake Area Plan. This document has guided development in the community for almost 20 years and was put together by the community to maintain its character. Although the Specific Plan also presents a picture of Intrawest's project adding less than 2,610 people, as called for by the June Lake Plan, more reasonable assumptions regarding density per unity would lead to a number that would far surpass the guideline.

June Lake Advocates conducted an initial survey in May. The results clearly indicate broad concerns for the development project proposed by Intrawest (see our Links page for references more information on the character and purpose of the developments completed by Intrawest.)
